Grand Canyon Video Tour

I suppose there may be grander places in the world than the Grand Canyon but I have never seen them. I can assure you there is no way any kind of picture or video will do justice to the shear breathtaking vastness of this geological wonder. None the less, here are some videos I like for one reason or another. Hope you do too.

Grand Canyon

This is a nicely done video that is set to "Horse with No Name" . It sort of gives you a feel for what it's like getting there from Las Vegas, Hoover Dam and such. I thought they did a good job of capturing some reverence for the canyon too.

I might warn you that if your spouse keeps telling you to back up as they are taking your picture with the canyon in the back ground, your relationship probably has big problems ;-).

Havasu Falls Grand Canyon Arizona USA

They did a real fine job on this video!

I will probably eventually move this to the camping and hiking page but it does give you a sense for what is down near the bottom. This is a tributary to the Colorado River on the Havasupai Indian reservation. And, I might add an 11 mile hike (or horse ride) to the camp ground. Special reservations required and kind of expensive for a backpack trip but well worth seeing once.

Where Eagles' Echo

This video has a sort of surrealistic feel to it, I'm going to guess because of the low frame rate and perhaps some lighting tricks. I like it though, because .....well the canyon has a surrealistic feel too! The end or the video looks like Navajo indian reservation which is what you cross to get to the north rim.

It looks like Mr. Edgar Allen Pug fail off one of those cliffs and landing on his nose ;-)

If you don't already know, Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo'ole is the singer in the song - . ( I had to ask.) What a magnificent voice! Sadly, he died 10 years ago but I'm sure his voice will out live all of us. You can get this song at Amazon.com

Grand Canyon Helicopter Entrance

And of course you can get a view from a chopper too. Not my preferred method of viewing things but a lot of people like it.

Grand Canyon North Rim Trail

For my money the canyon is better from the North Rim which is 1000 feet higher than the south. Thus the vegetation type includes aspen trees, douglas fir and such. Camping is potentially spectacular just out of the national park. A lot of different critters live there including some monster mule deer.

The North Rim gets 1/10 the visitors as the South, no doubt, because it's hard to get to. However there are some interesting things to see and do up that direction. The Vermilion Cliffs, Lee's Ferry, the Little Colorado, Sunset Creator and Wapatki are all between Flagstaff and the north rim. Be sure to stop at the trade post in Cameron and have a Navajo taco.

You can get a great deal on turquoise and other jewelry at any of those roadside stands buying in many cases direct from the artist.

Grand Canyon Skywalk - VOA Story

The latest thing is being able to walk out over the canyon and look straight down. That's got to be a mighty strange feeling.

This is a fairly nice news piece that also shows some other attractions up Walipi reservation.

If by chance, you are 'one of those' who walk up to the edge of the Grand Canyon and say "It's just a big hole in the ground." May I suggest you walk down in that hole from whichever trail you happen to be near for just, maybe, a half hour or so. Make note of how far down the trail you actually make it and I suspect you will begin to realize the term "big hole" is sadly deficient. If not, I'm going to guess you'll get the true picture on the walk back to the rim. Take water.

Actually the canyon is best viewed from the bottom up one step at a time but not everybody can do that. If your physical condition allows for this possibility, then take a look at our hiking page and consider doing it that way. If you're a hiker, you'll like it!
