Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon

Northern Arizona is perhaps most famous for the Grand Canyon but when I ask people where they would like to have spent more time, they often say, Sedona. This part of the Verde Valley is indeed magical and magnificent. Sedona is where art, commerce and architecture of our modern civilization meet the stunning red rocks and life filled canyons of nature. And you don't have to look too far, Tuzigoot and Montezuma Wells for example, to realize we are not the first to have bathed in this magical basin of almost surrealistic existence.

Sedona - an unexpected de-tour

It's New Years eve 2007 and my gang is heading down to the Verde Valley for our annual New Years winter camp out. Unfortunately a bad accident had closed I-17 so we get detoured through Oak creek Canyon and Sedona. A route that is not designed for heavy traffic. After an hour or two of just crawling along I decided to pull out the camcorder and shoot so footage. Here's what I ended up with.

Another slide show of the Verde Valley area.

Landing a Twin Star at Sedona

The airport in Sedona sets atop a mesa. This gives one a sense for what it's like to land there.

There are surely worse places in the world to be.

Slide Rock State Park Az

When I was a kid we would drive over to slide rock in the summer and occasionally be the only people there. ( That's not likely to happen nowadays.) Of course, we would spend many hours sliding down the now famous 'Slide Rock'.

This video proves you don't have to be a kid to enjoy the thrills of slide rock. Apparently he was 64 years old when he did this.

More water would have helped.

Bell Rock Pathway Sedona Arizona

Mountain biking is awesome in all of Northern Arizona but particularly so in the Verde Valley (especially in the winter). Here is a little trip on sections of the Bell Rock Pathway.

This comes to us from those who would encourage you to mountain bike Sedona.

Montezuma Castle - Montezuma Well Camp Verde, Az.

Montezuma Castle is not far from Sedona and puts our modern civilization into context and our own existence into perspective.

It's nice of people to share there vacation videos with us. Here you get a little sense for how much they enjoyed it.

Watch for that 'terrible troll' under the bridge!
